As an artist we tend to think in terms of getting signed to a label or getting a manager as smoking of starting block in the business. It’s like we are not in the business until we have been validated by label or a manager. The truth is, if a label today wants to sign an unknown artist with no following, it would be pretty safe to say they have no idea what they are doing.

You are in the business as soon as you decide to take it seriously (provided you have the basic musical, songwriting and performance skills required.) What you need to do is make noise. Get online, build a presence, start a mailing list and put some hard work in building it up. It is never too early to start and if you sit around and wait for it to grow you are doing it wrong! Go out and play shows. Build a name for your self. Learn the business, by doing it all your self.

And by the time the label or manager comes knocking, you have enough knowledge to not get screwed by either. So go out there and make noise!
