In the past few months I have learned an important lesson that I would like to share with you. This is something so obvious, but still most of us don’t think about it at all. It has made me more aware of how I can improve several aspects of my life, both work and personal. And it is extremely simple.
Ask your self every day, what did I learn today? By asking yourself this simple question, you recognise what you learned, you also might realise you learned more than you thought. Often we learn something and forget about it as soon as the next shiny object passes by, but if we mentally knowledge what we learned, there is much bigger chance the lesson will stick with us.
It also make us appreciate a day that might have felt otherwise not so productive. Besides we should aim to learn at lest one new thing every day. It can be something extremely simple, like keyboard shortcut, or It can be a life changing lesson, it does not matter. The most important thing is that we learn something new and knowledge it.
Music business is forever evolving, and to keep up with the changes, you need to have hunger for new information. You need to be willing to learn. But also put this to practical use. Ask your self after your next concert, what did you learn from it. By doing this you set your self on a course to improve your live show.
Or songwriting. I was under pressure to finish a song earlier today. I had been putting it off, and the thought of it was starting to bring out an inner voice of doubt. What if I could not finish the song? Once again I was reminded that most of the time songwriting is about turning up in the first place. It took me few hours to finish the song, and now I am really happy with it. The thing is, deep down I knew this was the case, but in the past I had not knowledge the lesson. But this time I wrote it down: Most of the time songwriting is about turning up. This will make me remember it in the future.
So tonight when you sit down to your dinner table, ask your self what did you learn today? Or even better ask the person who ever you are having diner with, what did they learn today? Sometimes saying these things out loud will help you to see them in a different light, and by involving others we can instantly help others to acknowledge that their crap day might not have been waste after all.
