City Lights

oldcountryhouse This week’s song is my favourite type of songs, story song. It started only as a riff, but soon found its home in a set of lyrics I had been half working on for a few weeks and it all just clicked in its place. I was all exited and set to record it straight away after finishing the song. I had great plans for the arrangements, but once I had recorded the guide guitar and vox (Which by the way I got really into the story while I was singing) I realised in my mind it was perfect as it was. So after a few days of mixing and going back and forth in my mind about the arrangement, I decided to just go with my first instinct. I am listening to the song back over while I write this and I am so happy I stuck with the simple arrangement 🙂 What do you think?

The story is a bit sad, but also a so common problem with many rural areas around the world. It’s an old man on his own in a small house down the country. His wife could not hack with the country life and left long ago and left him with their daughter. Now the daughter is all grown up and as there was not much work around she had to move to the big city, leaving his father with just the bottle to comfort him in the loneliness.

So there you go 🙂 Let me know what you think of the song and as always please share it far and wide.
