Mama Was Right

This week’s song “Mama Was Right” is a story song. From time to time I have a need to write story songs. It seems these story songs are the ones that often resonate with people. But also writing a story song forces you to look at something from other people’s perspective, which is something I think we don’t do enough these days.

I was reading an article on how the current budget here in Ireland is doing nothing to improve those worse off. I talk a bit about how I believe we are getting close to the tilting point in the western world, where the rich are getting richer and the poor get kicked in the head while they are down. I have nothing against someone working hard and making a better life for them selves. But where it gets messy is when the super rich start to use their money and power to influence the laws and legislations to their advantage. When we are able to gamble on stock market on others disadvantage, even on countries failing. To me this is ethically messed up.

But when I think about those of us just trying to get by, my heart always goes out for the single parents. There is only so many hours in a day, and trying to build a better world for your children must be an overwhelming task. And to keep a brave face in a midst of it all is something I have amazing respect for. There is always a story behind all of us, and this song is one of those stories.

We feel sorry for those struck by a disasters of life, illness, accident or even worse. But we seem to forget about the everyday struggles. No one fights their corner, they are left to deal with it on their own.

None of the above obviously is not tied to just Ireland. It is a word wide problem. And once again I ask you to make a difference in someone’s life. If you know someone in similar situation as I describe in this weeks song, share it with them. It will make them realise you are thinking of them and that they are not alone. Just the knowledge of it can be very powerful thing and mean a world to them.
