Learning the music business

BusinesNotjustMusic In my teens I was something I would call an inwardly rebel. I wasn’t really much trouble to others as such, but if I was told to do something, I’d probably go out of my way to do just the opposite. You know, teenage angst…

Why Am I telling you this? Well I was not very focused on my career in any way. I was a lost soul in many ways. There was some pretty serious personal stuff going on my life. But I knew one thing, music was my life! I did not really know what way to go about building a career out of it. And back in those days I didn’t have Google to ask for information, my only sources were other musicians, local library and of course my parents and relatives trying to push me towards getting the “backup plan” career. Well that never worked…

I did work a lot on my guitar playing, but even that was not very focused. It was more about playing a lot, instead of trying to practice smart.

I think the biggest mistake in my career, if you can call it a mistake… I call it a learning curve ๐Ÿ˜‰ is how much I spent time trying to find someone to do the business side for me, instead of learning how to do it myself.

Now I am getting really good at figuring things out. If there is something I need to learn to do with the music business, I go after the information and I learn. There are a lot of information available to us these days, and sure it takes lots of filtering to get through the crap, but that’s part of the job ๐Ÿ™‚ It took me a long time to get to this mindset, but now I enjoy the whole process and I also enjoy helping others by sharing what I have learned. And guess what? Since I concentrated on doing it myself and truly learning the music business, my career has gone through the roof ๐Ÿ™‚

If you were expecting a magical link to a website at the end of this post where I learned it all, you are going to be disappointed… There are literally thousands out there, and what I learned, tested and found out to work for me is actually a mixture of information from many many sites. But you could do lot worse than checking out the Music promotion category on my blog ๐Ÿ˜‰
